We’re bombarded daily with so much information about losing weight! Which “diet” you should follow! What “workout/s” you should be doing, and how often you should be doing it! It’s a full-time job just working out what’s right, what’s wrong – and more importantly what will work for you! But there is a ONE BIG SECRET, and honestly, it’s not rocket science. I’m going to reveal how I lost nearly 20kg’s (1/3 of my body weight) back in 2011/12, and NEVER looked back…
In 2011 after a lengthy round of business related stress & depression, I wasn’t eating right, I wasn’t exercising much, my hormones had spiralled out of control and sleep was intermittent at best. The end result was a very bloated, overweight, tired, unhappy and unbelievable moody Cherene. The clincher finally came the day I saw the photo on the left. I cried!!! Then came to ugly realisation that my weight had sky rocketed to just over 65kg (I’d never been more than 50kg at worst). And so began the journey of working out WTF to do about it, and making some serious lifestyle choices and changes. And there you have it – the “secret” to losing weight and keeping it off…
LIFESTYLE CHOICES AND CHANGES!
Since I had already studied for my Fitness Certificate and Nutrition Coaching, I knew WHAT was required, so created my own personal game plan! To eat better and exercise more in a balanced kind of way – and make more time for ME, to chill out and get my stress levels under control. I just wanted to feel happy again. To feel fit and healthy, and to love my body again instead hating it every damned day!
Oh, and here’s some news! Did you know that you’ll get the best results from 80% Diet/Nutrition and 20% Exercise? YES, you heard me right. Your best results come from the kitchen, not the gym.
Now here’s my 4 Step Plan…
1. MOVE YOUR BODY
The best way to get fit is simple…do whatever the hell you ENJOY doing, that makes you HAPPY, and INSPIRES you to keep it up! Find YOUR Fitness. That might be going to the gym, but it might also be surfing, paddle boarding, yoga, hiking, ballet, playing a team sport, tennis, skiing, dancing – or in my case pole dancing and aerial yoga.
Move your BODY in a way that moves YOU – JUST.GET.MOVING!
2. FUEL YOUR BODY
I believe in eating to FUEL and SUPPORT my body and mind, as well as nourish my soul. Understanding what the different food groups are is a great place to start. Oh, and ditch the deprivation mentality. Food is there to be enjoyed…but everything in moderation of course.
- PROTEIN at every meal = lean meat, poultry, fish, eggs, seeds and nuts to name just a few sources
- HIGH FIBRE = lots of fresh fruit and veggies – go organic where you can
- LOW GI = ditch the heavily processed stuff (cakes, white bread, flour, sugar etc). Take the Wholemeal or Gluten Free option every chance you get
- HEALTHY FATS = Omega 3’s & 6’s in avocados, oily fish, dairy, nuts, chia seeds, extra virgin olive oil
- WATER = drink plenty of water (at least 2 litres a day)
EAT well to LIVE well and FUEL your body
3. FEED YOUR MIND
We are the gate-keeper of our own mind! If you don’t watch what you let into your mind (negative thoughts from yourself &/or others), then you are allowing weeds to grow and to spread. So what’s the best way to feed your mind? To proactively feed it. And it’s a lot easier than you may think –
- Read for at 10 minutes a day (a book, a blog, a magazine).
- Meditate for 10 minutes every morning.
- Listen to an inspiring or informative podcast.
- Sign up for an online course that interests you.
We need to make a conscious effort in the areas of Personal and Soul Growth. These small changes will add up in one very big way and you will become more in control of your thoughts and more conscious of the ways that you can ELLEvate your life.
Never stop learning, because life never stops teaching
4. FIND MORE BALANCE = SELF CARE
One of THE most important lessons I have learned throughout my life is this, “Put your own Oxygen Mask on before trying to assist others,” or to put it another way, “You can’t serve from an empty vessel.”
When our own tanks are running low (or empty) we have nothing left to give others, so it makes sense to make our own Self-Care a priority. We have to be kind to ourselves! Not just to our body, but to our mind and soul also. I practice self-care daily through meditation, journaling, a long relaxing bath, walks on the beach, spending quality time with my family.
Self care is not selfish! It’s a NOT NEGOTIABLE!
And if you tick these 4 steps off your To Do List, I think you’ll find the last 3 will take care of themselves –
- You will get happy(er),
- You will discover your best health & fitness, and
- You will love the skin you’re in.
