5 Tips To Looking Great on Zoom – without getting off the lounge

Leggings have become your full-time work apparel, and the lounge is our new “office”. This has become our new normal during the COVID-19 pandemic, and with all this ZOOMthe video chat service has become a household name! BUT, if you’re like a lot of people, you don’t necessarily want your clients or co-workers to see your “home office” (aka the lounge), but perhaps you also don’t know know what to do when it comes to being on camera.

But never fear, my little chickens – this mother hen has simple tricks that will have you looking Très Chic in your next video catch up!

1. What to Wear –

Well here’s the good news.. You only need to look good from the top half  Getting dressed for work has never been so easy! Pyjama pants, leggings and trackies are totally acceptable! It’s really about feeling comfortable in your own skin, so put on your favourite work top/ jacket combo, paired with your favourite ripped jeans and fluffy slippers.

Just make sure that if you need to stand up to get something in the room, turn the video off so everyone can’t see what you’re wearing on the bottom half… now that would be embarrassing.

2. Work Out Your Best Colours

Have you noticed how colours affect your mood. Colour is a powerful communication tool and can be used to influence mood and physiological reactions. Warm colours such as red, yellow and orange can create emotions such as comfort and warmth, while Cool colours can create emotions such as calmness as well as sadness.  Avoid Patterns as they can really distract from your face online which is what you want to avoid. Keep things plain and block colour.

3. Create Great Lighting

Lighting will also make a big impact on your presentation of yourself. The idea is to minimal shadows on you face, avoid light directly above your face as this will create shadows under your eyes and make you look like you have bags.

Sit in front of a window so the soft light is on your face. This might be harder if you’re in a study without windows of course, so a solution would be to get a lamp and put it on just behind your laptop so the light from the lamp is shining directly on your face which will create a similar light to that of the window.

4. Zoom’s Secret “Touch Up” Filter

Just rolled out of bed but don’t want anyone to know? Zoom’s Touch Up My Appearance option puts a soft focus filter on your video feed, giving you the appearance of a good night’s sleep (even if that’s not really the case). You’ll look more polished, and you won’t have to worry about wiping off any makeup once your virtual meeting is over.

I may or may not be using it for my 2pm meeting

5. Get a Virtual Background

Zoom has an awesome tool called Virtual Backgrounds. You can upload your own images if your computer is up-to-date. All you have to do: When you’re in your next Zoom meeting, click the “^” arrow next to Start/Stop Video and then click choose a virtual background. It’s sure to bring a lot of laughs and a lighter mood for the meetings.

I hope you find these tips helpful. I’d love to hear how they work for you, so drop a note in the comments below

I guess you could say I was a “late bloomer” – ie. it wasn’t until my 40’s that I discovered my love for all things fitness, nutrition, health and wellness. It started in 2004 when my eyes were opened to the fitness/sport of Pole Dancing just coming to Australia. We wanted IN, and by 2005 my daughter Bailey and I had opened our first pole studio – Pol-arise Fitness & Dance (which is still operating today under Bailey’s management). It wasn’t long before we also expanded into Aerial Yoga, Barre, Pilates, Suspension Fitness and Yoga, and I became a qualified Nutrition, Health and Life Coach (amongst other things). DEFY GRAVITY FITNESS brings together over 15 years of knowledge, and fusing it with Functional and Suspension fitness to create my EXCLUSIVE new Bungee and Suspension based fitness classes.
