The word itself contains the word HEAL – to restore balance and natural order in the body. When balance and natural order are restored to a state of complete harmony, our body, mind (and spirit) can operate at optimum levels.
Holistic Health is actually more of an approach to life, rather than focusing on a specific illness, goal or part/s of the body. The goal is to achieve maximum well-being, where everything is functioning to the very best that is possible for the individual, and is an ongoing process – a lifestyle, which includes a personal commitment to be moving toward the right end of the wellness spectrum.
HOLISTIC HEALth therefore embraces a multi-faceted approach to health including healthy, nutritious food choices, making physical exercise/fitness a priority as well as making time for self care/personal growth. A conscious or mindful approach to all these areas creates a state of harmony and balance in the body, mind and soul.
A huge number of illnesses and premature death can be traced back to lifestyle choices. There are the well-known dangers connected with drugs, alcohol and nicotine, but less recognised is the impact of excesses in things like sugar, caffeine, stress and negative attitudes. Combined with deficiencies in exercise, healthy, nutritious foods, and low self-esteem – these gradually diminish the quality of our life, and can set the stage for illness to take hold.
Our quality of life – both now and in the future – is actually being determined by the multitude of seemingly unimportant choices we make NOW, everyday.
MY THOUGHTS ON…
Diet(ing) & Nutrition – I believe in eating to FUEL and SUPPORT my body and mind, as well as nourish my soul. I believe in making mindful/conscious choices when it comes to food, and I believe that food is there to be enjoyed…but everything in moderation. I’m not a nutritionist or dietician, but I have spent over half my life studying healthy, nutritious eating and that’s what I promote.
I believe it’s important for people to understand more about the food they put in their mouths, so I’m all about sharing that knowledge with others – what are carbs, what are proteins, what’s the difference between good fats and bad fats, low GI and high GI foods! For me, diet and nutrition is all about education, awareness and eating well to fuel and support my body.
Physical Exercise & Fitness – I want to ENJOY whatever physical activity I do. I could go to the gym for the sake of working out, but if I feel intimated or uncomfortable setting foot in a gym, then I’m not going to walk out of there feeling good – and I definitely won’t go back the next day. That’s the problem: People feel obligated to go to the gym, or worse – they feel there’s no other alternative!
I am often asked by people what is the best way to get fit and my answer is simple…do whatever the hell it is that you ENJOY doing, that makes you HAPPY, and INSPIRES you to keep it up! That might be going to the gym, but it might also be surfing, paddle boarding, yoga, hiking, ballet, playing a team sport, tennis, skiing, dancing – or my case pole dancing and aerial yoga. In short…“MOVE YOUR BODY IN WAYS THAT MOVE YOU!” Just get MOVING!
Self Care & Soul Growth – One of THE most important lessons I have learned throughout my life is this, “Put your own Oxygen Mask on before trying to assist others,” or to put it another way, “You can’t serve from an empty vessel.”
When our own tanks are running on fumes (or empty) we have nothing left to offer others, so it makes sense to make our own Self-Care and Soul GROWth a priority. We have to be kind to ourselves! Not just to our body, but to our mind and soul also. I practice self-care daily, as well as making a conscious effort in the areas of Personal and Soul Growth. “Never stop learning, because life never stops teaching.”
